Above the steep hiking trail that winds through the rugged mountain landscape and runs along the imposing moraine of the Morteratsch Glacier, high up on the slope and embedded in the striking backdrop of the Bernina Range, stands the new Boval Hut, simple, powerful, and harmoniously integrated into the landscape.

«The unobstructed view of the impressive natural scenery is deliberately enhanced by the orientation and form of the hut, allowing guests and visitors to fully experience the surrounding environment.»

The unobstructed view of the impressive natural scenery is deliberately enhanced by the orientation and form of the hut, allowing guests and visitors to fully experience the surrounding environment. The roof shape is a central design element and, with its innovative pitch, fulfills several functions at once. It maximizes the efficiency of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems, reduces
heat loss, and, with its low-lying eaves line, symbolizes protection and shelter.

The project is based on a sustainable and resource-efficient approach that responds to the specific challenges of the alpine location. It combines a solid lower level made of prefabricated concrete elements with a lightweight prefabricated
timber construction for the upper floors. Inside the new Boval Hut, wood dominates as the defining material, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. At the heart of the common room stands a striking tiled stove in deep oxblood
red, a tribute to the old Boval Hut and to the ox, the place’s namesake and symbol.

«At the heart of the common room stands a striking tiled stove in deep oxbloodred, a tribute to the old Boval Hut and to the ox, the place’s namesake and symbol.»

With this thoughtful and sustainable concept, a mountain hut emerges that meets the demands of nature, the needs of its guests, and modern building standards alike. The project combines innovative technology and sustainable energy systems to ensure efficient and environmentally friendly operation.
